When I'm Gone
A guide for your family, not to your passwords

Everything your family will need, in one safe place.

When I'm Gone is a private, encrypted journal of the practical things your family will need when you're no longer here. Where the will is. Who to call. What you wanted. No searching. No guessing.

Stays on your device No subscription, ever Free updates for life
Built for people, not tech experts

Simple enough for anyone. Secure enough for everyone.

If you can write a letter, you can do this. We've kept the buttons big, the words plain, and the choices few.

Large, clear text

Designed for readers of all ages. No tiny fonts. No confusing menus. No jargon, ever.

Available in 11 languages

English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Arabic, Chinese and Hindi.

Light & dark mode

Easy on the eyes, day or night. Switches automatically with your device, or change it with one tap.

When someone dies, the hardest part after the grief is not knowing where anything is.

Most families spend weeks piecing together paperwork. It doesn't have to be that way.

"Where's the will?"

Your family shouldn't have to hunt for a solicitor's name during the worst week of their lives.

"Which accounts exist?"

Bank accounts, pensions, insurance policies. Most families miss at least one. Some never find them.

"What did they want?"

Burial or cremation? Which music? Who to call first? Don't leave them guessing when it matters most.

How it works

Three simple steps. No tech skills needed.

Take your time. Fill in what you can today, the rest another day. There's no rush.

Step 1

Answer simple questions, section by section

18 guided sections cover everything, from your GP's name to your funeral wishes. Fill in what you can, skip what you like, come back any time.

Nothing is mandatory. You're never asked for passwords.
Step 2

Everything is encrypted on your device

Your journal is locked with a password only you know. Your information stays private. Nobody can read it, not even us.

If our company ever closed, your journal still works as a PDF. It doesn't depend on us.
Step 3

Your family unlocks it with a recovery card

When you finish, keep your one-time code with your will, or hand it to someone you trust. That's all they need to read your journal when the time comes.

It's important you keep this safe. Chose someone you trust and love. Make their grief easier to bare.
What's inside

18 guided sections. Everything your family might need.

Skip what you like. Come back any time. We never ask for passwords or login details.

A letter of gratitude
"Maja, Thomas — I have spent a great deal of time thinking about what to write here and I am not sure I have the right words even now. What I want you to know is that everything I have done — the hours, the work, the choices — was organised around you, even when it did not feel like it. The house in Oxford smells of books and coffee and that is deliberate. Please keep it that way for a while. There is a folder on my desk labelled For afterwards. Everything practical is in it. The complicated things are in this journal. The things that cannot be written down, you already know. Mit der allergrößten Liebe — Mama."

He knows where the important stuff is. He has a spare key.
Two leaves intertwined with a smaller leaf at the base, representing family held together
A note from the founder

I built this because my own family didn't know where to start.

When my grandad died, we spent weeks in his study with a cardboard box and a notebook, piecing together accounts, contacts and his wishes, most of which we only half-knew. The grief was hard enough. The hunting was cruel.

When I'm Gone is the small, simple thing I wish he'd had time to do for us. It isn't a will, and it isn't clever. It's just a way to write things down before you don't have time to.

If you have any questions, you can email me directly: info@whenimgone.life. A real person will reply, usually the same day.

A. Dinatale

Common questions

Honest answers to the things people ask most

Is this a will?
No. A will is a legal document about who inherits what. When I'm Gone is the practical companion to a will. It tells your family where to find the will, who your solicitor is, which accounts you have, who to call first, and what you wanted at your funeral.
Do I have to share passwords or login details?
No. We deliberately don't ask for passwords or login credentials. Your family doesn't need to log into your accounts. They need to know which accounts exist, who to contact, and where to find the paperwork. That's what we capture.
What if I forget my password?
When you set up, you receive a one-time recovery code. Keep it with your will or with someone you trust. If you forget your password, the code lets you back in. We can't reset it for you (that's the point of the encryption), but the recovery code always will.
Can my family read it without me being there?
Yes. That's the whole purpose. They use the recovery card you've left them to unlock a clear, calm, read-only view of everything you've written. No tech skills needed.
What happens to my journal if your company closes?
Your journal works without us. Because everything is encrypted on your device, it doesn't depend on our servers being online. You can also export your journal as a PDF at any time - so you'll always have a copy you can hold in your hand.
Is my information really private?
Yes. Your journal is encrypted on your device with your password before anything ever leaves it. We can't read it. Our staff can't read it. If we were ever compelled to hand over data, all anyone would see is encrypted gibberish.
Is it really a one-off payment?
Yes. £12.95 once. No subscription, no renewals, no upsells. Free updates for life. If we ever change pricing, anyone who has already paid keeps their account at no extra cost.
Can I see what it looks like before I pay?
Yes. There are sample journals on this page so you can see how it looks and what kind of questions it asks. £12.95 buys you the full thing once you're ready.
How much does it cost?
When I'm Gone costs £12.95 as a one-off payment (about $16 USD). There is no subscription and no renewal — you pay once and get free updates for life.
Is it a subscription?
No. It is a single one-off payment of £12.95. There are no recurring charges, no renewals, and no upsells.
Is it available outside the UK?
Yes. When I'm Gone is made in the UK but works anywhere with a web browser, and the app is available in 11 languages. The price is shown in pounds (about $16 USD).
